Whatever your timeline, we’ll help you master the four key skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

What is IELTS?

IELTS stands for the International English Language Testing System. It’s the world’s most popular English language proficiency test, trusted by over 11,000 organisations worldwide—including universities, employers, professional bodies, and government agencies. If you’re planning to study, work, or migrate to an English-speaking country, IELTS is almost certainly part of your journey.

IELTS preparation at Yorkshire English School

Every year, more than three million test-takers sit IELTS across the globe. It’s accepted by universities in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and beyond. Employers in healthcare, engineering, law, and countless other sectors require an IELTS score. Immigration authorities use it to assess English language ability for visa applications and settlement applications.

The beauty of IELTS is that it’s designed to test real-world English. Rather than focusing on grammar rules in isolation, IELTS measures whether you can actually listen to a lecture, read an academic journal, write a persuasive essay, and have a genuine conversation with a native speaker.

Academic IELTS

IELTS Academic is the version you’ll need if you’re planning to study at university or college in an English-speaking country. The test focuses on academic English—the language used in textbooks, lectures, research papers, and academic discussions. If you’re an international student applying to a UK university, IELTS Academic is what you need. Most UK institutions require a score between 6.0 and 7.0, depending on your course.

General Training IELTS

IELTS General Training is designed for work experience, vocational training, and migration purposes. If you’re looking to move to the UK, Australia, Canada, or New Zealand for work or personal reasons, this is typically the version required. It’s also used for UK visa applications (spouse visas, skilled worker visas, and settlement applications). General Training focuses on everyday English in social and professional contexts.

IELTS Test Format :“ What You Need to Know

The IELTS exam lasts 2 hours and 45 minutes in total and is divided into four distinct sections. Understanding the format is the first step to preparing effectively. Let’s break down what you’ll face on test day.

Listening Section (30 minutes)

You’ll listen to four recordings featuring a range of accents (British, Australian, American, and New Zealand English) and answer 40 questions. The recordings are played only once—there’s no rewinding. The topics range from everyday conversations to academic lectures. After listening, you’ll have 10 minutes to transfer your answers from the question booklet to your answer sheet. This is crucial: many students lose marks because they run out of time to transfer, so practising this carefully is essential.

Reading Section (60 minutes)

You’ll have 60 minutes to read three long passages and answer 40 questions. The passages vary in style and difficulty. In Academic IELTS, you might encounter texts about scientific research, history, or social trends. In General Training, the texts are more practical—job advertisements, company manuals, tourist guides. Question types include multiple choice, true/false/not given, matching headings, filling in blanks, and matching information.

Writing Section (60 minutes)

This section has two tasks, and you must complete both within 60 minutes. Task 1 requires you to write 150 words in 20 minutes. In Academic IELTS, you’ll describe, compare, or analyse a graph, chart, table, or diagram. In General Training, you’ll write a letter (formal or informal). Task 2 requires you to write an essay of at least 250 words in 40 minutes. You’ll be given a statement or question and asked to present your argument, analyse an issue, or discuss a problem and solution. The writing section tests grammar, vocabulary, task achievement, and coherence.

Speaking Section (11–14 minutes)

Unlike other major English tests, IELTS Speaking is conducted face-to-face with an examiner. This is both challenging and rewarding—it’s a genuine conversation, not a recording. The speaking test has three parts:

  • Part 1 (4–5 minutes): The examiner asks you general questions about yourself, your interests, your work, your studies, and your hobbies. It’s designed to help you settle into the conversation.
  • Part 2 (2 minutes): You’ll be given a card with a topic and 1 minute to prepare. You then speak for up to 2 minutes about that topic without interruption.
  • Part 3 (4–5 minutes): The examiner asks follow-up questions related to the Part 2 topic, encouraging more abstract discussion.

IELTS Band Scores Explained

IELTS uses a scoring system from 0 to 9 bands. Each of the four sections (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) is scored individually, and your overall IELTS score is the average of these four section scores.

The band scale is as follows:

  • Band 9: Expert User – Fully operational command of English
  • Band 8: Very Good User – Fully operational command with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies
  • Band 7: Good User – Operational command, though with occasional inaccuracies and inappropriateness
  • Band 6: Competent User – Generally effective command, but with some inaccuracies
  • Band 5: Modest User – Partial command; many mistakes
  • Band 4: Limited User – Basic competence in familiar situations

IELTS scores are commonly reported in half-bands (6.5, 7.0, 7.5), which gives universities and employers precise information about your level.

What scores do you need?

  • UK undergraduate degree: 6.0–6.5
  • UK postgraduate (Master’s) degree: 6.5–7.0
  • Healthcare professionals (nurses, doctors): 7.0+
  • UK spouse visa: 5.5
  • UK skilled worker visa (points-based system): B1 level (equivalent to approximately IELTS 5.5–6.0)
  • Professional registration (engineering, law): Varies, typically 7.0+

How long are IELTS scores valid?

IELTS scores are valid for 2 years from the date of the test. After that, most organisations will ask you to retake the exam. This is because language proficiency can decline if not actively maintained.

Listening Skills

In our listening classes, we don’t just play recordings and hope for the best. We teach you proven strategies for identifying key information, recognising question patterns, and managing your time during the 30-minute test. You’ll practise with authentic IELTS recordings, learn how to take effective notes, and develop your ability to understand various accents and speech patterns. We also teach you how to use the 10-minute transfer time wisely.

Reading Skills

The IELTS reading section tests both speed and comprehension. We teach you skimming and scanning techniques, how to identify main ideas versus supporting details, and how to tackle different question types efficiently. You’ll learn how to manage your time across three lengthy passages, how to approach unfamiliar vocabulary, and how to maximise your score by focusing on high-yield questions first. Our materials mirror the actual test format.

Writing Skills

Writing is where many students struggle. We focus on structure (how to organise your ideas clearly), grammar (accuracy without awkwardness), vocabulary (using a range of words appropriately), and task achievement (directly answering the question asked). For Task 1 (descriptive/letter writing), we teach you how to analyse data and describe trends clearly. For Task 2 (essay), we teach you how to present arguments logically, support your points with examples, and conclude persuasively.

Speaking Skills

Speaking anxiety is real, but practice breaks through it. We provide individual and group speaking practice, mock speaking tests with genuine examiners, and feedback on your pronunciation, fluency, grammar, and vocabulary. You’ll learn how to expand on simple answers, express complex ideas, and manage nervousness during the test. We record your practice sessions so you can hear exactly where you need to improve.

Course Features:

  • Small classes of 8–12 students (maximum)
  • British Council accredited teachers with TEFL qualifications
  • Mock tests every 2 weeks with detailed feedback
  • Individual speaking practice and coaching
  • Weekly progress assessments
  • All materials included (textbooks, practice papers, worksheets)
  • Access to our online learning platform with additional resources

Duration Options:

  • Intensive: 4–6 weeks, 15 hours per week
  • Standard: 8–12 weeks, 6–9 hours per week
  • Part-time: 12+ weeks, 3–4 hours per week
  • Private Lessons: Bespoke scheduling and one-to-one attention

IELTS Preparation Tips from Our Teachers

Our teachers have distilled their collective experience into these practical tips to help you prepare effectively.

Listening Tips

  1. Familiarise yourself with different accents: Listen to podcasts, films, and documentaries featuring British, Australian, American, and New Zealand speakers. This trains your ear before test day.
  2. Take active notes during practice: Develop a shorthand system and practise note-taking alongside listening. This helps you capture key information without getting distracted.
  3. Read the questions first: Before each recording plays, quickly read through the questions. This gives your brain a roadmap of what to listen for.
  4. Don’t dwell on difficult answers: If you miss an answer, move on. Overthinking will cause you to miss the next section.
  5. Practise the full listening test regularly: Don’t just do individual exercises. Complete full practice tests under exam conditions to build stamina and time management.

Reading Tips

  1. Skim the passage first for main ideas: Don’t try to read every word carefully on the first pass. Quickly identify the main topic and structure.
  2. Identify the question type before answering: Different question types require different strategies. True/False/Not Given requires different thinking than multiple choice.
  3. Use paragraph headings and subheadings: These are often clues to what information is in each section. They help you navigate long passages quickly.
  4. Don’t spend too long on one question: If you’re stuck, mark it and move on. You can return to it if time allows.
  5. Build your academic vocabulary: Keep a vocabulary notebook. Read newspapers, journals, and academic articles regularly to expand your knowledge of sophisticated English.

Writing Tips

  1. Plan before you write: Spend 2–3 minutes on Task 1 and 5 minutes on Task 2 just planning. Jot down your main ideas and how you’ll structure them.
  2. Use signposting language: Phrases like “firstly”, “in contrast”, “as a result”, and “to summarise” help your writing flow logically and show the examiner you can organise ideas.
  3. Check your grammar under exam conditions: After you finish writing, go back and check for tense agreement, subject-verb agreement, and appropriate verb forms. These are common areas where students lose marks.
  4. Vary your sentence structure: Mix short, punchy sentences with longer, complex ones. This shows grammatical range and keeps the reader engaged.
  5. Write in full sentences for Task 1: Even when describing a graph, don’t use bullet points. Write complete sentences and paragraphs.
  6. Address the question directly: Before you start writing, identify exactly what the prompt is asking. Many students lose marks for writing well but off-topic. Keep referring back to the question.

Speaking Tips

  1. Practise speaking out loud regularly: Don’t just practise in your head. Record yourself speaking and listen back. Notice where you hesitate, where you’re unclear, and where your pronunciation needs work.
  2. Expand your answers: If the examiner asks “What’s your favourite season?”, don’t just say “Summer”. Say “Summer, because I love warm weather. I enjoy going to the beach and spending time outdoors.” This shows you can produce connected speech.
  3. Use a range of grammar: In Part 3 especially, show that you can use different tenses (present, past, conditional) and complex structures. Avoid repeating simple patterns.
  4. Slow down: Many students speak too quickly when nervous. Slow, clear speech is easier to understand and gives you time to think.
  5. Ask the examiner to repeat if necessary: If you don’t understand a question, it’s fine to politely ask for clarification. This is better than giving an answer to a question you’ve misunderstood.
  6. Don’t memorise speeches: Examiners can instantly spot memorised responses. Instead, prepare ideas and ways to discuss them flexibly. Authenticity is rewarded.

We’ll advise you on a realistic timeline during your initial consultation.

Q2: Should I take Academic or General Training IELTS?

A: If you’re applying to university or college, you need Academic IELTS. If you’re applying for work visas, migration, or certain professional schemes, you need General Training. Some organisations accept either, so check your specific requirements with your university or employer before booking your test.

Q3: How much does an IELTS course cost?

A: Our courses range from around £400 for a 4-week intensive to £1,200 for longer part-time programmes. All materials are included. Use our price calculator for an exact quote, or contact us at bookings@yeschool.uk for a custom quote.

Q4: Can I retake IELTS if I don’t get my target score?

A: Yes, you can retake IELTS as many times as you’d like. Many students do retake, often after additional preparation. There’s typically a 7-day waiting period between sitting the test and retaking it, though you can retake it on different dates. We offer course packages that include support for retakes.
