My three months at Yorkshire English School (YES) were simply incredible. It was a unique and transformative experience, both in terms of learning and personal growth.
I started in February, and I still remember my very first lesson; it felt like complete chaos! I could barely understand anything and felt totally lost. That same week, I had a Midwife appointment, which was also a disaster. I panicked, cried, and felt frustrated. The English I had studied before was so different from the local accent and intonation, and the way people link words here made it seem impossible. I honestly thought I wouldn’t learn anything and that I had wasted my money…
But as the weeks went by, something changed. Slowly, I started to understand more and more; it was as if I were coming up for air after drowning. The more I progressed in class, the more I could "breathe". And after just three months, I could see how much I had grown. Of course, three months isn't enough to become fluent, but it was the solid foundation I needed to feel confident and keep going.
What made the experience even more special were the people. I had the honour of sharing this journey with two amazing women whom I now have the pleasure of calling my friends: Gwyn and Dilan. And even though I didn't have the chance to talk as much as I’d like with lovely girls Abbi and Murriam, I’m sure we’ll keep in touch and hopefully meet again soon. I also can’t forget Wendy and Ismael, who are both so kind and truly made me feel welcome.
The environment at YES is warm and supportive, and I felt part of a community from the very beginning.
During all of this, I also carried a very special companion with me to class: Sophie, my baby girl, is in my belly yet, and she made her presence known with her little kicks, especially when I fully understood something Gwyn was saying! I like to believe she’ll be born understanding perfect English.
In the near future, I plan to take private lessons at YES, and my husband will join me. We both want to improve our English together, not just for ourselves, but to help Sophie grow up bilingual and confident in both her languages. This is important for our personal and professional lives.
So, to anyone unsure or afraid, like I was at the start, YES can truly change your perspective and give you the tools and support you need. It was one of the best decisions I made.

I would like to start by saying how incredibly grateful I am to have been a part of Yorkshire English School. My journey with YES began nearly three years ago, when I had just arrived in the UK for the first time. I wanted to improve my general English and prepare for the IELTS exam to apply to university.
At that time, I was just a young woman in a new country, trying to figure out my present and future. I was nervous about whether I’d be able to socialise or if my English would hold me back, but I was completely wrong. YES quickly became my happy place. I met people from all over the world and learnt so much about different cultures. What made my experience truly special was the teaching staff, especially Gwyn, Maria, Peter, and most of all, Tim Catterall. Tim was not just a teacher but a mentor and a true inspiration. He made my journey feel easy and motivating. He believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself, and he guided me not only academically but also personally. I remember asking him for advice about what to study, and even though I initially thought I belonged in IT, he saw a different side of me, one that was creative and expressive. He suggested a course in media or marketing, and he was absolutely right. I studied at YES for six months and successfully achieved a B2/C1 level in General English. I also scored 6.5 overall in IELTS, even though I only needed a 6 to enter university. Later, I stayed on as a teaching assistant for a few more months. Now, I’m working as a retail assistant and have just completed my second year at the University of Westminster in London. I’m proud to be one of the top students in my class, consistently scoring above 80% in each module. Studying and working at the same time is challenging, but I genuinely love what I study and enjoy being creative and free in my thinking, just as Tim predicted. Studying at YES didn’t just improve my English; it changed my entire life, personally, academically, and professionally. YES is my foundation, the place where my journey began, and I will always be thankful. Hopefully, one day, I will be able to come and visit everyone

A friend of mine suggested here and I’m so glad I listened to him. People were helpful to me and hearing the British accent all the time makes you want to speak like them! From the beginning to the end the staff was with me, I really enjoyed when we cooked and ate my country’s traditional meal together! I think the best thing was debating, I don’t feel shy to speak in English anymore. I even found myself on the street talking with stranger British people about the weather!

Huddersfield is a small town compared to London, but the lifestyle is friendlier and cheaper, so it’s a good choice of location. I chose this school as I didn’t want the chaos of a big city.

I need to thank them for giving me unforgettable summer memories. It was more than I expected, I didn’t have time to get bored, there was always stuff to do. I even forgot to talk to my friends in my own country! The staff created an environment for me to practice a lot, with their activities, etc. Now I feel free to talk in English. YES is located in Huddersfield, very near to the University so it is a great location and very easy to get to. The staff have been very friendly and helpful.
